I call them knitted gauntlets, the Fall/Winter 2005 issue of KnitScene, where I got the pattern, called them fingerless mitts. Same thing, I think. I made these (my first cable project) with Noro Kureyon color #131. I was pretty happy with the way they turned out. The thumb was my first project with double pointed needles. Note: don’t use metal double pointed needles when you first start using them – use bamboo. The stitches slide off the metal needles fairly easily, making using dpns seem harder than it is.

how do I make a thumb for my fingerless mitt ? Ihave them on a holder at this point. The directions does’nt tell me what needles to use dpn or knitting needles. THese are my first time using dpn’s I think I’m doing pretty good, except for the thumb?

Thank You
I don’t have the pattern in front of me, since I’m at work, but I’m working on another pair of mitts, and I think they’re basically the same.
You’re going to put those stitches that are now on the holder on two double pointed needles. With a third dpn, pick up the remaining stitches around the base of the thumb. It’s probably three of four stitches. Join yarn and with a fourth dpn, start knitting and knit about three or four rounds. Bind off and weave in ends. To be honest, I always have a hole or two in the base of the thumb that I have to close up with some extra yarn. I’m probably not picking up enough stitches.
