The link between sleep deprivation and psychiatric disorders

Recently, research by a team at the University of California, Berkeley, uncovered a link between sleep deprivation and psychiatric disorders. Previously, it was thought that psychiatric disorders caused sleep deprivation, and not the other way around, but it appears now that sleep deprivation may create symptoms that mimic psychiatric disorders or may be partially responsible [...]

Ten Tips for Surviving the Holidays with Depression

I just got back from shopping on Black Friday, the day after Christmas. It’s called Black Friday because it’s the first day of the year that retailers (potentially) start seeing black ink on the balance sheet instead of red. For almost anyone else, unless you’re suffering from the holiday blues, Black Friday is the beginning [...]

Why I Do What I Do

Someone recently asked why I spend so much of my time working to raise awareness of depression. To be honest, I hadn’t really thought about it in years. It’s been such a big part of my life for the last twelve years that I no longer think about the actual reasons why I do what [...]

A Grieving Period

My biological father died at the end of September from Lou Gehrig’s disease. If you read my earlier post about his death, you’ll know that our relationship was complex, to say the least. I wasn’t sure how I would react when he passed away. He was not a big part of my life in the [...]

Five Excuses that Might Prevent You from Getting Help for Depression

So you know you have depression, or you’re pretty sure you do, but you’re putting off doing anything about it. Procrastinating is a fairly common state of affairs for people with depression. I once put off renewing the registration for my car (before I was diagnosed with depression) and of course it expired, as they [...]

Never, Ever Make a Major Life Change if You are Depressed

So let’s say that you’re dissatisfied with something about your life, and you’re thinking of making a big change. Your job isn’t satisfying, your marriage or relationship isn’t working out or maybe you don’t like where you live. You’re pretty sure there’s something better waiting for you if you change your circumstances. If you’re feeling [...]

Felted bowl pattern with welt

I am planning on putting up a pattern in the next couple of weeks for a felted bowl with a welt on the bottom. The felted bowls kind of annoy me when they wobble, so I think they welt will help.

“I got a little Jesus Christ-y”

I have no idea what this means. Lawrence said it means he got a little funny. Figuring out their minds is a full-time job, I swear.

Why can’t we talk about it?

I’ve decided that mental illness is the new sex. Hmmm, I probably have to back up and explain myself. There really is some logic behind that pronouncement, trust me. A study was released last week that showed that primary care physicians are not talking to depressed patients about whether they have suicidal thoughts or not. [...]

My son’s first engagement

Lawrence told me yesterday that he and his friend Ava are “getting married together” when they’re older.
