Ten Ways to Prevent Accidents at Home

  1. Get dressed while sitting in a chair that has arm rests.
  2. Put pants on while lying on a bed – don’t try to put them on while you’re standing.
  3. If you have the choice of bathing in a shower stall or a bathtub, use the shower stall. It’s safer to get in and out of.
  4. Don’t hold onto soap dishes or towel racks for support in the shower or bathtub. Instead, either install grab bars or place a resin chair in the shower or tub to sit on while you bathe.
  5. Use an elevated toilet seat to make it easier to get up from the toilet.
  6. Use a food processor for cutting and peeling food when possible.
  7. Use pans with a wide base that can’t be knocked over easily.
  8. To avoid slipping and tripping, don’t use throw rugs on the floor.
  9. Install hand railings on both sides of a stairway so that you have something to hold onto going up and down stairs.
  10. Carrying a portable phone around the house will eliminate the need to rush to answer the phone.
