Ten Ways to Prevent Accidents at Home
- Get dressed while sitting in a chair that has arm rests.
- Put pants on while lying on a bed – don’t try to put them on while you’re standing.
- If you have the choice of bathing in a shower stall or a bathtub, use the shower stall. It’s safer to get in and out of.
- Don’t hold onto soap dishes or towel racks for support in the shower or bathtub. Instead, either install grab bars or place a resin chair in the shower or tub to sit on while you bathe.
- Use an elevated toilet seat to make it easier to get up from the toilet.
- Use a food processor for cutting and peeling food when possible.
- Use pans with a wide base that can’t be knocked over easily.
- To avoid slipping and tripping, don’t use throw rugs on the floor.
- Install hand railings on both sides of a stairway so that you have something to hold onto going up and down stairs.
- Carrying a portable phone around the house will eliminate the need to rush to answer the phone.
